Looking for a unique adventure that combines wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and a mission of conservation? We’re so excited to share one of our favorite local gems with you: The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert, California. It’s a truly special place where you can connect with nature and learn about the amazing animals and plants that call the desert home.
A visit here is more than just a day out; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the world’s deserts. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for these incredible ecosystems and the creatures that thrive in them. We think you’ll love it just as much as we do, and we’re happy to share what makes it such a memorable experience.

What Makes The Living Desert Special?
We’re so proud to have this world-class facility right in our backyard. The Living Desert isn’t just a zoo; it’s a conservation organization dedicated to protecting desert environments. The park is beautifully designed, showcasing animals in spacious, naturalistic habitats that represent their native desert homes. As you walk through the grounds, you’ll feel transported from the deserts of North America to the savannas of Africa.
The team here does such an incredible job caring for the animals and creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Their passion is contagious, and it shows in every detail, from the pristine gardens to the engaging educational programs.
Must-See Attractions
There’s so much to see and do, and we want to make sure you have the best visit possible! Here are a few highlights we think you’ll really enjoy:
Rhino Savanna
One of the most impressive exhibits is the four-acre Rhino Savanna. It’s home to some of Africa’s most iconic animals, including black rhinos, giraffes, and waterbucks. It’s truly a breathtaking sight to see these magnificent creatures roaming in such a large and open space. You might even get the chance to feed a giraffe, which is an experience you won’t soon forget!
Australian Adventures
Head down under at the Australian Adventures habitat! You can walk among wallabies and admire the colorful birds of the Australian desert. It’s a fun, interactive area that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the Outback. We love how this exhibit allows for such close and personal encounters with the animals.
The Living Desert’s Botanical Gardens
The gardens here are just as impressive as the animal exhibits. With over 50 immersive gardens and 1,600 different plant species, it’s a paradise for plant lovers. You’ll find everything from towering palm trees to delicate desert wildflowers. The themed gardens, like the Mojave and Sonoran gardens, are wonderful for learning about the unique flora of different desert regions.
